Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G), formulated and spearheaded by the Ministry of Rural Development (MoRD), Government of India, was formally launched in 2016 as the restructured and transformed successor to the erstwhile Indira Awaas Yojana (IAY). The core mission of PMAY-G is to bridge rural housing gaps and ensure that every eligible rural household without a permanent shelter can construct a disaster-resilient, eco-friendly pucca house measuring at least 25 square metres with a dedicated hygienic cooking space. Under the standard funding framework, beneficiaries in plain areas receive ₹1,20,000 (₹1.20 Lakh), while those in hilly, difficult, and Integrated Action Plan (IAP) areas receive ₹1,30,000 (₹1.30 Lakh) shared in a 60:40 ratio between the Centre and States (90:10 for North-Eastern and Himalayan States, 100% for UTs). In addition to direct cash assistance, PMAY-G integrates powerful programmatic convergence: (1) 90 to 95 person-days of unskilled wage labour under MGNREGA credited directly to the beneficiary’s Job Card; (2) ₹12,000 for toilet construction under Swachh Bharat Mission – Gramin (SBM-G) or MGNREGA; (3) Piped drinking water through Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM); and (4) Electricity connections via RDSS/Saubhagya. Beneficiaries are identified objectively through housing deprivation parameters under the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) and validated Awaas+ surveys, verified by Gram Sabhas, and prioritized on the national AwaasSoft MIS with mandatory multi-stage geo-tagged photographic inspection via AwaasApp.
PMAY-G provides a pure capital grant for rural house construction that does not need to be repaid. The funding is shared in a 60:40 ratio between the Government of India and the State Government in plain areas.
